Liddington Can Do

Over the last 12 months the team of ‘Liddington Can Do’ volunteers have been active in making a difference around the village. The major focus of this group has been clearing the verge alongside the Purley Road towards Commonhead, planting bulbs and then planting a hedge and trees with the support of Wiltshire Wildlife. Several of the election candidates have been actively involved in this work and are keen to see it continue. There are other projects planned for 2026 and beyond.
All candidates see opportunities for the village and commit to deliver with the support of village volunteers who have proved that they can make a difference:
• If elected, we will focus on improving safety and security for young and old. Cameras deter litter louts and speedsters. We’ll warn and catch them.
• We’ll put a new Parish Plan together to seek input from villagers on a range of projects. It’s twenty years since the LPC asked villagers what they want. We’ll not only ask and collate, but we’ll report back on tasks and timescales and make it happen.
• The Purley Road project to Commonhead is a success, a wonderful vista for visitors to the village. We’ll focus next on the permissive paths to the Ridgeway crossroads. We’ll recover old paths and work with landowners on new permissive paths. We want more circular walks to encourage exercise.
• We’ll engage young people in fun activities so they can identify trees, birds, animals and appreciate nature. We’ll personalise children’s nametags on trees.
• We’ve contacted the Bio-Gas Station directors, and they’ve agreed to work with us to minimise the impact of the Bio-Gas Station on our village – low level lighting, double barriers of native trees and improve access by pressuring Highways as we know Commonhead Roundabout will be a problem.

Extending the Parish Council

It is a quirk of the election system that there are three further seats on the Parish Council allocated to Liddington Badbury Wick (where Liddington Parish and Badbury Park overlap) though no candidates have been nominated by Badbury Wick. As a result, Liddington Parish Council can co-opt three villagers on to the council after the election.
Our group is committing that those three seats will be hopefully filled as follows:
• We will recruit a member from Badbury Wick
• We will recruit women members as the Parish Council is not currently representative of the village’s diversity

We want our local pub, The Village Inn, to thrive.

A pub closes in England every day, a shocking statistic.

If our local goes, that’s the focal point of the village gone. We got the support of Adam, the pub landlord, and set up a volunteer group – four retired guys and five women with attitude.

The flowers in the pub are now changed every Friday which gives the place a lift.

Adam and his team set out a restaurant -style room at the back of the pub and each table is laid out to a high-dining standard.

For a Saturday evening in March we advertised a four-course Gourmet meal. It sold out in a few days.

David did three nibbles, the gourmet starter and the main course of pheasant. Maurice was David’s commis chef and he also focused on a full array of vegetarian dishes and an olive oil chocolate cake for dessert.

We’d an anxious dry run for friends earlier in the week which gave us confidence. We managed the kitchen professionally on the evening, aimed high to a Master Chef standard. The guests loved it, agreed it was a big success, offered encouraging feedback, and it was very profitable for the pub.

During this year we have plans for more four-course gourmet meals. We’re not trying to change the world but with support from villagers, guests and volunteers we’ll do what we can for our pub.

When the gourmet meal was finished, we left a spotless kitchen and had a pint of Guinness on the house. There’s only one poem for that, with a nod to the poet, Flann O’Brien.

Swindon Open Studios 2025 – Opportunity to visit your local artists

Swindon Open Studios is a free community arts event, offering the public the opportunity to visit artists’ studios, workshops and exhibition spaces in September.

During the weekend of 20th and 21st September local artists from Liddington, Wanborough and Bishopstone are opening their studios to you.
